Dogon (Dogo, Habe, Kado, Kibisi, Tombo), Mali &
Burkina Faso
Ceremonial figure. The 250,000 Dogon people inhabit the large
Bandiagara plateau, with most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the
east. On their small fields they cultivate their staple diet, millet. The sparse
cultivated land on the rocky terraces and cliff edges can be irrigated only with
difficulty. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build
their houses. The Dogon are among African cultures that have remained closest to their
ancestral traditions. Their art is extremely versatile and individualistic, although
common stylistic characteristics such as a tendency towards stylization are
apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult
and very complex mythology.
