Figurine of a Female Ancestor. The Grassland Region, in southwest Cameroon, is a hilly and mountainous area covered by an equatorial forest in the south and a savannah in the north. This beautiful, once heavily forested volcanic region of the Cameroon is the home to a diversity of kingdoms, chiefdoms, and independent villages that while largely autonomous, display considerable political, religious, and artistic unity, including sculpture and masks. Statues representing ancestors are found all over the Bamum and Bamileke areas. These figures, representing the kings, king’s wives and his attendants, are usually stored in a secret part of the palace and displayed when a foreign dignitary visits or during important ceremonies. This statuette originated from Bamileke Region is apparently an image of a female ancestor.
