West Africa
Rooster eating a snake (village bronze).
Throughout West Africa, bronze casting has been the prerogative of blacksmiths, who
wielded power in their communities. Distinct from those commissioned for royal and court
use, village bronzes are usually small in scale and made for use by individuals as
protective, curative, or commemorative devices. They could also present mythological
subjects. This figurine of a roser eating a snake is an example of such village bronzes.
This piece came from Burkina Faso.
