Yoruba (Yorba, Yorouba), Benin, Nigeria and Togo
Female figure. The Yoruba numbering 10 to12 million
live in southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin in an area of forest and savannah. The Yoruba people are the largest nation in Africa
with an art-producing tradition. The depiction of the woman kneeling and holding her
breasts, is well known in Yoruba carving. The graciousness of the gesture of greeting, of
offering and acceptance, is compelling. It is at once sensuous and chaste. The unknown
carver, in the very simplicity with which he has presented the image, conveys the modesty
and power of woman in Yoruba culture.
